Editor Reviews

"I am really into thrillers/mysteries because they are propulsive and go down easy, but I am especially into the ones where you get sucked into the personal lives of the crime solver。 。 。I would read Louisa Luna’s grocery lists if she published them。" —Sam Irby, Vulture

“PI Alice Vega is nothing less than an utterly compelling protagonist in her second case (after Two Girls Down, 2018), which resumes her remarkable partnership with fellow PI Max Caplan。 。 。 A somewhat Shakespearean ending satisfies with triumphant women standing strong on a stage littered with battered villains。” —Booklist, starred review

“Luna skillfully balances tragedy and humor throughout, via blood-pressure-raising fight scenes and stressful suspense, plus hints of romantic tension between Vega and Cap。 She also offers a fascinating and disturbing look at how a criminal enterprise might work, pulling in various complex threads while crafting a story that’s wholly believable and sad。 The Janes is a superbly entertaining read, especially for readers who are already fans of the amazing Vega, whose Jack Reacher-esque sense of justice offers reassurance that, no matter how long it takes, no bad deed will go unpunished。” BookPage

The Janes has everything—a plot ripped from the headlines and darkly twisted, explosive action, original characters, a dash of humor, and memorable settings。 The story grabs the reader like a steel band of cold tension tightening with each new development。 Investigators Alice Vega and Max Caplan deserve a long career with many more cases ahead。” —Anne Hillerman, author of the New York Times best-selling Leaphorn, Chee & Manuelito mysteries

The Janes is a timely, gripping thriller with an ending that will leave you utterly satisfied but wanting more of Alice Vega。 Get to know her now, because she and her partner, Max Caplan, will be around for the long haul。”—Alafair Burke, New York Times bestselling author of The Better Sister

"Thrilling。 。 。[Luna's] novels have established her as a powerful up-and-coming voice in the genre, and we can't wait to see what she does next。" Crime Reads

“An intricately plotted, adrenaline-fueled conspiracy thriller。 。 。Luna's latest entertains while subverting gender stereotypes and confronting the politics of immigration。” Kirkus Reviews

“Packed with thrills and heartache, The Janes kept me up way past my bedtime to see what rule-bending, jaw-breaking, no-fools-suffering P。I。 Alice Vega would do next in her relentless pursuit of justice for the victims of a border sex trafficking ring。 An absolutely rip-roaring read from a fantastic talent。”—Amy Gentry, bestselling author of Good as Gone

“What starts as a straightforward, if extremely challenging, assignment—figuring out who killed two barely teenage Latina Jane Does and dumped them in the San Diego, Calif。, area—quickly turns treacherous for PIs Alice Vega and Max Caplan in Luna’s gripping sequel to 2018’s Two Girls Down。 。 。 Plunging the now-rogue team into a perilous sprint to stay one step ahead。 。 。as they race to unravel a plot as dark and twisted as one of the tunnels [used] for smuggling between Mexico and the U。S。 。 。This dynamic duo has a long run。”Publishers Weekly

When the bodies of two anonymous girls are discovered without ID, Alice Vega, private investigator, is called to San Diego to try and solve the mystery。 The anonymous girls are young, abused, and haven't been reported missing by family or friends, and the FBI suspects that these Janes are victims of a human trafficking ring。 Alice enlists the help of her partner, Cap, to try and identify the Janes and find any other survivors before it's too late。 This is the second in the series, but it could totally be read as a standalone。 Louisa Luna's first book, Two Girls Down, introduces Alice Vega and her partner, Max "Cap" Caplan, as well as some sideline characters such as the anonymous internet hacker "The B*stard" and Cap's daughter, Nell。 Two Girls Down takes place on the east coast, and then The Janes shifts the setting to the west coast。 Despite being part of the same "series," each book contains an entirely separate case to solve。 Realistically, you could read these books in any order and have no problem picking up on characters, etc。 I think I found my new Hercule Poirot in the character of Alice Vega。。。 except Alice carries a set of heavy-duty bolt cutters as a weapon。 Imagine the intellectual mindset of Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot but in the body of a powerful, scrappy female who should never be underestimated。 I will say that the Alice Vega books are much more violent and gory than the Hercule Poirot books, but that's something I actually prefer。 I won't get too far into the details of the plot because I don't want to give anything away, but just expect a LOT of twists and turns (that goes for both books)!

The crime fighting duo I didn’t know I needed。 This is right up my street and just as good maybe even better than the first one。 5 amazing stars for Alice and Max。 Why can’t every heroine be a badass like Alice。 I hope this series goes a long way as I can’t get enough, I’m obsessed !Ok but I can’t be the only one feeling the sexual tension between the two of them ?! I thought listening to it on Audio would make me more productive and help to multitask but no I was very absent minded doing other tasks and solely focused on the narration。 It’s just so gripping regardless if you read it physically or audio。I’m hoping there will be a next one in the series。 The way the books end you can’t tell。 Highly recommend if you love in death series by JD Robb you will be in love with this。 。。。more

Excellent; Continuing character: Alice Vega; when two unknown girls are found dead, authorities ask Vega for help in finding other girls being trafficked; she ties in her sometimes partner Caplan, but not everyone wants them to succeed and they find themselves trying to save both the girls and themselves from cartel members

3。5。 A solid “hunt the bad people down” story about human trafficking with a strong female lead。

I read this book because I saw it on Goodreads and I remembered the first book in this series。 I love the characters , Vega and Cap。 I like the action scenes and the tightness of the storyline。 I truthfully could not put it down and will wait "patiently" the Ms。 Luna's next book。

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola

I am enjoying this series and the characters a lot。 I like that Vega is unconventional。 Cap is the perfect partner for her, both personally and professionally。 I hope Louisa Luna continues with the series。 Full review will follow shortly。

Suspense!! Great book about sex trafficking。 Alice Vega- superwoman。

It wasn't bad。。。 But it also didn't hold my attention that well。

In many ways Alice Vega fits a type。 She's a noble, honorable, lawbreaking, iconoclastic PI。 But, as a woman freed from the constraints of relationships (with the exception of Max Caplan), family and home, she is a steadfast defender of what's right。 As portrayed by Louisa Luna, Vega has an obsessive relationship with helping the helpless, and liberating the exploited。 She, of course, is canny, brilliant, strong and impulsive, and she can't stay out of trouble。 Another really good read from Luna In many ways Alice Vega fits a type。 She's a noble, honorable, lawbreaking, iconoclastic PI。 But, as a woman freed from the constraints of relationships (with the exception of Max Caplan), family and home, she is a steadfast defender of what's right。 As portrayed by Louisa Luna, Vega has an obsessive relationship with helping the helpless, and liberating the exploited。 She, of course, is canny, brilliant, strong and impulsive, and she can't stay out of trouble。 Another really good read from Luna。 。。。more

I did not read the #1 in this series but this book works as a stand alone。 When two girls are found dead it looks like the cases will become cold except for a piece a paper in one of the girl's hands。 It has the name Alice Vega。 Alice Vega is known for finding missing children so she is called in to work this case - for money。 She in turn calls in ex-cop Cap, her buddy。 Alice knows she can rely on Cap。 There are many twists that lead our detectives to a sex traffic ring that also involves drug。 I did not read the #1 in this series but this book works as a stand alone。 When two girls are found dead it looks like the cases will become cold except for a piece a paper in one of the girl's hands。 It has the name Alice Vega。 Alice Vega is known for finding missing children so she is called in to work this case - for money。 She in turn calls in ex-cop Cap, her buddy。 Alice knows she can rely on Cap。 There are many twists that lead our detectives to a sex traffic ring that also involves drug。 Lots of action to keep you turning those pages。 。。。more

“Cap watched Vega carefully。 He knew what her questions would be before she asked them, but she still managed to make them seem fresh, innocent, curious。 She pulled every last bit of information from Sarita Guerra like she was winding the string on a kite, drawing it in for a tight, safe landing。”The Janes is the second book in the Alice Vega series by American author, Louisa Luna。 This audio version is narrated by Tavia Gilbert。 The two “Jane Does” were Latinas, probably illegals, with the same “Cap watched Vega carefully。 He knew what her questions would be before she asked them, but she still managed to make them seem fresh, innocent, curious。 She pulled every last bit of information from Sarita Guerra like she was winding the string on a kite, drawing it in for a tight, safe landing。”The Janes is the second book in the Alice Vega series by American author, Louisa Luna。 This audio version is narrated by Tavia Gilbert。 The two “Jane Does” were Latinas, probably illegals, with the same killer, and a piece of evidence indicates there are more girls somewhere, maybe still alive。 Alice Vega is called in by the San Diego PD and the DEA; off the books, cash。 She insists on bringing in her own consultant。Even though he has just received a permanent work offer from a lawyer in Denville, with all the benefits that entails, Max Caplan jumps at the chance to work with Alice again: clearly, despite an interval of many months since their first encounter, his crush has not abated。There is something not quite right about the whole thing, so Vega, always cautious, holds back some of her findings and, when certain people begin acting out of character, her reluctance to share is vindicated。 Still, with her brilliant deductive mind and her excellent IT resources, she and Cap are quickly on the way to locating the girls。 But this turns out to be far more dangerous than they might have expected when Mexican drug lords form part of the bigger picture。Vega and Caplan’s second outing is fast-paced and cleverly plotted, with more than one exciting climax。 As before, the dynamic between these two is a delight。 Vega is smart, imaginative and resourceful, physically fit, accomplished with weapons and, in this instalment, creative with a set of bolt-cutters。 And she is skilled in both psychological and physical persuasion (yes, there is violence)。 Cap has different talents and intuitively follows Vega’s lead。 Cap’s inside knowledge of policing complements Vega’s strong sense of justice。The minor characters are certainly more than one-dimensional, while the dialogue offers plenty of humour, some of it deliciously dark。 The story does contain a few minor spoilers for the first book, but these little tastes are likely to tempt readers to indulge in Two Girls Down, if they have not already done so。 Fans will be pleased that the ending does not preclude further hook-ups between this pair, so it is to be hoped that Luna has many more shots of Vega and Caplan in her arsenal。 Brilliant crime fiction! 。。。more

Alice Vega is far too violent in this one。 She is a very smart and clever woman but far too cold to be relatable。 I have no idea what Cap sees in her。

Ok, this was probably a solid 3。5 to 4 stars for me, I just didn't love it as much as I loved the first Alice Vega novel。 In this one, I felt like Alice was a bit unlikeable whereas in the first one I found her aloof and eccentric。 Here I just thought she figured everything out a little too quickly, was a little too detached, etc。 I also didn't love the plot of this one quite as much, and thought it got a little cinematic towards the end with Cap and Vega escaping from fake hospitals and plottin Ok, this was probably a solid 3。5 to 4 stars for me, I just didn't love it as much as I loved the first Alice Vega novel。 In this one, I felt like Alice was a bit unlikeable whereas in the first one I found her aloof and eccentric。 Here I just thought she figured everything out a little too quickly, was a little too detached, etc。 I also didn't love the plot of this one quite as much, and thought it got a little cinematic towards the end with Cap and Vega escaping from fake hospitals and plotting an ambush on a drug cartel。 I do think that the detention center moments were well-done and, as such, really depressing。 。。。more

Solid story on a tough topic - human trafficking。 Very strong protagonist, Alice Vega。 Warning - violent。

Why I even read this book I do not know。 I was really not crazy about the first book but the second one I found even more annoying。So long Alice Vega and Max Caplan who manage to get themselves involved in every kind of life and death situation known to mankind but manage to carry on and solve the most difficult cases。 If there is ever a #3 I will not be reading it。

What can I say? I really enjoyed the first book but this second in the series lacked the charm of the former。 I actually speed read through the last quarter of it because I was so bored and not enjoying the violence。 Sometimes I really enjoy watching a movie but don't care to rewatch it just because of situations that are not enjoyable to watch and I don't want to go there。 That's how I felt about this book。 If the author writes another and makes it homier like her debut book I would read it bec What can I say? I have really enjoyed Louisa Luna's previous books and even loved Alice Vega in the first book of the series。 The Janes, however, was not an enjoyable or satisfying read for me。 Alice is again partnering with Cap to solve a crime and the crime itself - the trafficking and exploitation of Latino girls - is one that cannot be addressed enough。 The problem with The Janes is that it just kept going and going and going and got to the point where it was too unbelievable for words。 Alice is stabbed in I have really enjoyed Louisa Luna's previous books and even loved Alice Vega in the first book of the series。 The Janes, however, was not an enjoyable or satisfying read for me。 Alice is again partnering with Cap to solve a crime and the crime itself - the trafficking and exploitation of Latino girls - is one that cannot be addressed enough。 The problem with The Janes is that it just kept going and going and going and got to the point where it was too unbelievable for words。 Alice is stabbed in the side, is badly bleeding, looses a ton of blood but after she is stitched up by the coroner, she runs several miles, leaps across brick walls, fights a teenage kid and then runs away。 Yeah, right。 Either she is super human or this portion of the book crossed the line into fantasy。 I'm going with the latter。 I'm unsure if I will continue to read more of this series - perhaps this was just a one off - or if I am done with Alive Vega for good but I do know that this is a book I cannot recommend to others。 。。。more

This felt a little long but overall good。 I don’t get why they call these Alex Vega novels。 They are just as much about Cap。 But I’d read one of these any day of the week。 Lots of twists and turns。 Very entertaining。

This fast paced story had me hooked, I listened to the audiobook while I cooked dinner most nights for about a week。 I looked forward to following the story of the tough but feminine lead detective character Alice Vega and her, clearly love sick sensitive side kick male colleague as they hunted down the bad guys, in this instance seeking to rescue a group of underage Mexican girls who had been kidnapped into a sex slave ring, of course run by those you would expect better behaviour from。 Great s This fast paced story had me hooked, I listened to the audiobook while I cooked dinner most nights for about a week。 I looked forward to following the story of the tough but feminine lead detective character Alice Vega and her, clearly love sick sensitive side kick male colleague as they hunted down the bad guys, in this instance seeking to rescue a group of underage Mexican girls who had been kidnapped into a sex slave ring, of course run by those you would expect better behaviour from。 Great suspense and a lovely relationship with the central characters led to a satisfying ending。 Girl power! 。。。more

This had some layers to unpack as Vega and Hap searched for the missing girls。 Timely dealing with how the US detains immigrant children in jail like conditions without any paper trail or humanity。 It seemed like this book was more from Hap’s POV。
